LJ shootout week 11

Let me tell you a little story. A story about why the Giant-Tailed Butter-Herding Retriever came to be.

You see, there was a dog, a lovely black dog named Dahlia, who happened to have a gigantic tail.

She was a good girl, you see. A very good girl, not wont to doing bad things and falling prey to temptation, not even when that temptation was placed right in front of her.

She resisted with all her might, even though she was salivating over the wonderful smell. But then one day, her Mommy left her alone with that butter. And try though she did, Dahlia could not resist. She fell prey to temptation!

Her Mommy came home and discovered the missing butter, the blood on the sheets, the cut on her nose. And she knew. She KNEW that the butter had been eaten by Dahlia. She put on her "dunce cap" to show the world what a bad dog she was!

Dahlia was ashamed and she promised her Mommy that she would never ever steal the butter again. Her Mommy relented and Dahlia, now relieved of her "dunce cap," curled up on her bed, the healing cut on her nose the only evidence of her butter-stealing ways.

And after that moment, Dahlia was forever known as the Giant-Tailed Butter-Herding Retriever, a new strange mixed breed dog the likes of which may never be seen again!

The last photo was taken this week. The remainder were taken in August and October. Little editing was done outside of fixing some contrast issues.

She has nice white teeth ... how often do you brush them?

I don't, actually! lol I think her chewing on bully sticks has helped to wipe some of the tartar off and keep them pretty clean. She IS developing some tartar on her back teeth and so I want to see about getting her some raw bones to chew on at some point. I just need to get to a butcher's as our local grocery stores seem to have nothing of merit.

While I feed raw, I don't do RMBs in the winter simply because they're too messy for indoors - he just refuses to keep things on a sheet, he likes to move around with them, so they're reserved for outside chewing. Howie chews his Nyla Bones with his back teeth, if she likes those.

That makes sense. Dahlia doesn't like any of the nylabone things. I'm not even sure she'll chew on a bone and the smokes ones she seems to lose interest in quickly but I figure it's worth a try.

I keep asking and then forgetting because I NEVER get around to it, but what's something good to start with?

As soon as I picked up that bandanna and realized it was reversible I knew it had to feature Dahlia and the butter. I'm SO BAD for actually handing her a stick of the stuff! lol

LOL I do that too!
One of the cats (Okay, 99% of the time it's Jake, let's be honest) will do something naughty and I'll tell Dave, "Wait! Don't chase him off yet, let me just get a photo..."

Sometimes I've re-created the naughtiness just so I could get a snap, I admit it.

Hey - I've been really busy offline so I'm just now catching up with LJ - just wanted to see if everything was okay with Dahlia and what the vet said and all that. Hope all is well!

Oh hey! How is Darcy? I've been wondering what you found out about his lump!

Dahlia's lump has actually changed -- it's gotten a little softer and smaller so we've opted to keep an eye on it and put off surgery at this point. I just don't want to put her through unnecessary surgery. If it keeps getting smaller I figure it's just a cyst of some sort and may disappear over time.

Yay! Good news.

Well, two of his lumps (the smaller ones) are supposedly cysts and unless they change drastically in a very short time period, there's nothing that needs to be done about them. The bigger lump on his chest is a fatty tumor and needs to be watched closer (the vet took a measurement) because they can turn malignant quickly but moving it is far more traumatic so for right now, no biggie. Though I may get a second opinion because yet another cyst-like thing popped up around his belly and the timing of all of it just seems...not good, I dunno.

Anyway, and his slowing down that I thought was cancer? A disc in his back is bothering him so for right now it's no more running buddy, shorter times for fetch scattered throughout the day and try to avoid jumping, so Alexei even got him a stool to get onto the bed (it was way cute to see that, haha). If it gets really bad and affects his overall mobility we can do a couple of rounds of anti-inflammatories but for right now it's just a wait and see sort of thing. All that freaking out on my part was absolutely exhausting, though. :P

Sorry if this posts twice, LJ is being a jerk.

Aww poor Darce! No running? That's going to suck for him but hopefully it'll heal up quickly.

I'm glad they all turned out to be fatty deposits or cysts. My parent's dog has a fatty deposit and it hasn't changed in something like 2 years. It's just this big lump on her side. Hopefully his will stay the same though a second opinion, especially with another one cropping up, is always a good idea! I hope it all turns out to be nothing!

And LJ has been a pain lately. They've been doing updates/server changes or something and it's been slow and stupid ever since.

No miles long running sprees with me - never fear (for either of our sanity) - fetch and that sort of running and romping is still allowed. :)

That's good. And mental stimulation can exhaust them just as well! I'm always thankful Dahlia enjoys training when the weather is really bad (thunder and heavy rain mostly; anything else she'll go out in!).
