More playing with my external bounce flash

You all know you're desperate for more Dahlia photos, just admit it!

flash-5

She's not nearly as worried as she looks in these photos. LOL

There will hopefully be tons of photos this weekend. It's going to be GORGEOUS (mid 60s and sunny!) and Teri is coming to visit while my Dad is in the hospital. I need more photos for my mother's calendar!

Leeloo always has that worried or sad look when she's relaxing. I think she practices because it gets her more lovin'.

Haha probably so! All they need is a mirror and they can REALLY get it down pat. ;-)

Let's see...these photos were taken around 6:45am this morning, so it's been almost 5 hours? Ok she's probably mostly dry by now! lol

Amazing photos! She's beautiful :) and you are a great photographer!! I would love some tips on how to photograph black dogs, actually - I have a black Cocker Spaniel and I'm finding it difficult to get good shots. Granted, part of that is because he spends all his waking hours never being still (he's only 3-month old!) but you've taken great photos of Dahlia in all kinds of circumstances! :)

Um...luck? And lots of photos?

When they move a lot they're SO MUCH harder to take photos of. Dahlia is a bit of a flop-dog, so many of my pictures are like the ones you see here. Dahlia laying on couch. Dahlia laying on porch. Dahlia laying on recliner that she stole from me. LOL

Outside shots are a TON easier. The inside ones I took here were with a bounce flash so it created light that wasn't shining directly on her (as you've probably found out flash + black dog = BAD PICTURE!! lol). This flash bounces off the ceiling/wall and so it adds light without being light directly hitting the dog. I just got it and I LOVE IT.

For outside shots, I've just done a ton of practicing (what kind of camera do you have?). I make sure I meter off the dog, since if I meter off the sky or grass she comes out too dark. I have one with manual controls so I like aperture priority more than anything else on it. It helps create those nice blurred backgrounds.

I ALWAYS get down on the ground to take photos because ones taken from up above never look quite right.

I also occasionally use a fill flash outside (just having the flash on, sometimes stopped down a bit) and I have a diffuser that goes over the flash so that it's not quite as strong.

Ummm...not sure I have much else! I just take photos and some come out really good! I take a LOT of bad photos. I just don't share those ones. ;-)

Play around with the settings on your camera and take a lot of photos. And my best suggestion for getting a dog still for photos? Train a really good solid stay and when you want to take photos, get out the treats, get your dog to stay and snap away! It's worked wonders with Dahlia. LOL

She's sad because (a) it was raining and rain is horrible, ya know and (b) we were getting ready to leave her for the day. She's all curled up on the couch ready to sleep. lol

I make my own calendars, one of Dahlia for myself and one for my mother of her dog, Teri. It's sort of become tradition to make a Teri calendar for her. I figure why get a calendar of other people's dogs when you can make your own!

It's awesome! And so easy to do. I use Shutterfly and it only costs about $20. You can do one photo per month or do collages or whatever.

The hardest thing is deciding which photos to use! I like just having one per month and there are so many I adore!

I've done calendars in the past, a couple of times of my zoo photos and once of pictures from my trip to Madagascar, and I made some copies to give away. I never thought of making one specifically as a gift for someone, though. ::facepalm::
